How to Pace Your Asynchronous Course
How to Pace Your Asynchronous Course
This video is based on a request I received to discuss the best approach to opening modules in a fully asynchronous online course. The viewer also asked for my thoughts on what content to include in a given week. Were a few short slideshows enough? Or should something else be added? I discuss both these topics in this video.

      I would recommend researching various website hosting options and seeing what you think might work best for you from an ease of use perspective and a financial perspective. For example, I decided on WordPress (since so many website are built using it) and went for the paid self-hosting route. But there's also a free WordPress option, as well. [I talk about that option in this video: ruclips.net/video/XQ9ZoY4s0I4/видео.html.] It took me some time to learn how to create my WordPress site, but all I needed was time and online tutorials. I do offer a consult call service, if you want to discuss this 1:1: www.evereducating.com/creative-confidence-calls/. Best of luck!

    I don't rubric grade, but I find many of many students are conditioned to rubrics. Sometimes it feels like some students don't know what to do if they don't have an itemized list of things to check off while working. It's troubling.

    • @EverEducating
      @EverEducating Месяц назад

      Yes, I wish holistic grading was more popular, though I know that can be difficult in situations were educators are unfortunately "teaching to the test" and feel stuck with rubric grading. And with online async courses, a lack of rubrics could also cause issues, since students might not have a strong grasp of the instructor's expectations. But for in-person college courses, where those two considerations don't apply, I feel that it's more beneficial for students to practice their critical thinking and listening skills when completing an assignment, rather than just following a strict rubric. Plus, allowing for creative interpretation and expression has its own rewards, as well.

    • @EverEducating
      @EverEducating Месяц назад

      Since the answers to your prompts will be influenced only by the sources you include in the notebook and what you have checked off for the AI to use when answering the prompt, you can easily figure out how to properly cite the sources in your article/presentation/etc. Of course, you'll want to double-check that the answers are correctly interpreting/synthesizing the source material, but the automatic creation of citations in the answers should help with that. I wouldn't suggest using the actual language of the answers in your research. It's more of a way to synthesize/summarize a lot of research material quickly so you can get a strong sense of the material without reading it from start to end.

    Erika, I see this is posted 4 years ago - wow! I teach math and use my iPad with Loom to make videos. I have an audio lag problem - what I am writing lags behind what I'm actually saying. Do you have a fix for this problem?

    • @EverEducating
      @EverEducating 4 месяца назад

      Hmm, I'm not sure this has an easy answer. My suggestion is to do some experimenting with the best place for your WiFi connection. Lag tends to be caused by poor WiFi connection, so you might find that recording in a certain room or part of your office or even a different location might decrease the lag or get rid of it entirely. If that doesn't work, then you might consider tweaking your teaching style to work with the lag. So, write out a portion of the lesson, then once it's on the screen, talk about what you just wrote. Then move on to the next section, etc. Good luck!

    I need to complete research as part of my job. Where can I find researchers who want to collaborate?

    • @EverEducating
      @EverEducating 4 месяца назад

      This really depends on your specific situation. Your job might require you to look only to coworkers as your potential research partners. In that case, I suggest reaching out to your manager/advisor asking for their advice on finding collaborators. If your job is more flexible and you can pick any collaborator you want, then you might try finding online spaces where your field's researchers spend time (LinkedIn, Twitter, professional organization discussion forums or listservs, etc.) and place a call for collaborators. Best of luck!

    How do I get them to watch. I’ve embedded bonus points in videos and they still don’t watch them.

    • @EverEducating
      @EverEducating 4 месяца назад

      This is a tough one! Bonus points are a great idea; sorry to hear it's not working with your students. If their answers to the questions are saved for you to review, then another option might be to express interest/pride/excitement over the answers. So, positively calling out students who are answering the questions to show them that you are paying attention to those answers and giving them chances to shine in front of their classmates if they take the time to answer the questions. You could also tell them when you plan on reviewing the student answers to the video questions. So, "Hey, I'll be reviewing X video this Thursday and will be adding the bonus points to Y assignment at that point. Make sure to get your answers in by noon if you want the chance for bonus points." The time limitation and reminder will hopefully inspire a bit more engagement.

    Personally, I think the first R is the most important, as it’s the starting point of the whole process. Sure, you can receive feedback without requesting it, but taking the step to request feedback means you have power over the type of feedback you receive. So, that’s my answer to which R I think is most important. Though, of course, all five have value.

    such a great video thank you. I also have a question, I am creating a program for people who want to learn English through books, literature and fairytales, but I am still having so problems making it happen, I still don't know if I should talk only about fairytales or maybe make it broad. How do you know how to create a good course for your students?

    • @EverEducating
      @EverEducating 5 месяцев назад

      This program sounds amazing! Are you creating an online course through a tool like Teachable? Or will it be in person through a local library, college, etc.? I think there are two main approaches you can take. 1. Create a course using reading materials that you love, that you think will be valuable to people wanting to learn English through literature. Having created a course that really excites you, market it to your target audience and/or teach it at the in-person institution that you are teaching in. 2. Do audience research and create a themed course based on the results you receive. You might find that a fairytales-focused course is what excites your potential students. Or, perhaps they want to learn through short stories or a mix of genres. Once you have that information, build that course. I wish you the best in your endeavor. If you want to brainstorm 1:1, I have a consult call service, as well: www.evereducating.com/creative-confidence-calls/. Good luck!
